SCA | The Swedish Committee for Afghanistan

SCA is a Non Governmental Organisation. We’ve been working in Afghanistan with education, health, rehabilitation of people with disabilities and rural development for over 30 years. SCA today employs about 6,300 people – midwifes, nurses, doctors, care takers, principles, teachers etc. Cross cutting issues for all of SCA’s work are human rights and gender.

According to accessible figures around 7 million students are currently attending Afghan schools. 2001 this same figure was less than 1 million students. This is a proof for development, regardless of a difficult security situation in the country.

Water safes lives! From 1992 to 2010 SCA has constructed 15,550 wells equipped with hand pumps and 600 latrines in our coverage areas.

Low life expectancy (47 years for men, 45 for women) and high maternal and child mortality and morbidity rates indicate that the health situation of the Afghan people remains poor. Every year we rehabilitate tens of thousands of afghans with disabilities. Every year, in our workshops, we produce and provide thousands of orthopedic appliances; fitted prosthesis, fitted orthosis, wheelchairs and mobility aids. The Afghan school system has also taken important steps to include children with various disabilities.
